CADDO LAKE

NOVEMBER 2025 - TEXAS/LOUISIANA, USA

A SANCTUARY OF ANCIENT CYPRESS TREES

Caddo Lake is one of the most enchanting natural landscapes in North America—a vast 25,400-acre maze of open water, hidden channels, and swampy corridors that straddles the border of Texas and Louisiana. Protected internationally under the RAMSAR treaty, it is the largest natural freshwater lake in the South and home to the world’s most expansive cypress forest. Its bald cypress giants—many more than 200 years old—rise from the still, tannin-rich water, their branches draped in flowing Spanish moss. At sunrise and sunset, these ancient trees glow with deep reds and oranges, transforming the lake into a scene that feels both primeval and otherworldly.

Beyond its visual magic, Caddo Lake sustains an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Egrets, herons, owls, eagles, and kingfishers make their homes high in the cypress canopy, while otters, beavers, snakes, and alligators move quietly through the dark water below. The lake’s history runs just as deep—the region was first seen by Native Americans in the 8th century and later named for the Caddo people who lived here for generations. My images aim to capture not just the beauty of this rare ecosystem, but the sense of mystery, serenity, and timelessness that defines one of America’s most remarkable wetlands.
